Awards Program

The FDEA Award for
Outstanding Contributions to Developmental Education

An award was started in 1982 that has become an annual opportunity to recognize developmental educators who have made significant contributions to the field. In addition, the award reflects the recipient's membership and involvement in FDEA, interest and concern for students, professional development, leadership, and creativity.

The FDEA Joseph Howland
Excellence in Developmental Education Scholarship

In 1991, the first FDEA award for excellence scholarship was presented. The purpose of the award is to honor students who have taken developmental education courses on their pathways to success. Students who are able to achieve high standards of excellence are deserving of our highest praise and greatest support. One of the most exciting FDEA events is the recognition of student success through the awarding of a scholarship at the association's annual conference. (Application information). The award was retitled in 1994 to recognize long-time developmental educator and FDEA member, Joe Howland. Recipients of this distinguished award to date are listed below.

The FDEA Student Success Essay Contest

In 2003, FDEA implemented an annual essay contest for successful developmental students. Competition is based on a 250-500 word essay that addresses student success. Winning essays are published in the FDEA newsletter and are shared with legislators throughout the state to promulgate the value of developmental education. The President's Circle Award

This annual award recognizes a successful developmental student with a $1000 award. The Circle Award is based on academic acheivement and the recommendation of a student's instructor. Link here for details and entry information.

The Addison Wesley Longman Award

Sponsored by Addison Wesley Longman Publishers, a $500 award was started in 2005 to recognize a deserving developmental education student who has completed reading and/or writing classes. The award recognizes the student's success in communications. Judging includes an essay submitted by each applicant describing how reading a specific book influenced the student's life.  Details on the Longman Scholarship and the application process can be found by following this link.
