It is evident from Pat's educational background that she always aspired to devote herself to the field of education, specializing in the area of developmental education. She earned her A.A. Degree in 1966 from Santa Fe Community College, a B.A.Ed. with Honors in Elementary Education in 1969 from the University of Florida, an M.Ed. in Education in 1970, an Ed.S. in Higher Education with Developmental Education Specialization in 1982 from Appalachian State University, and an Ed.D. in Developmental Education in 1992 from Grambling State University. Pat is well known by educators and administrators alike in the field of developmental education. At her beloved alma mater, Santa Fe Community College, she has dedicated over twenty-seven years of service, beginning as a
reading instructor from 1970-1977, moving on to become Chair of Acadmic Resources and Assessment from 1977-1997, and then presently serving as
the Director of Academic Resources and Assessment and Assistant to the Vice President for Student Services and
Workforce Development. She is also well recognized for her almost innumerable article and presentations, subjects
including higher education, community college student assessment, testing, reading, college
readiness, technology, remediation, and a host of other areas. She has traveled to just about every well-known
city in the State of Florida, not to mention other states like California, Virginia, New York, Georgia, Arkansas,
Washington, D. C., Texas, Tennessee, and Louisiana.Dr. Pat Smittle is definitely an outstanding educator! She possesses a wealth of knowledge and wisdom not only in the field of education, but especially in the field of developmental education. She is held in the highest esteem by colleagues and friends. Those who are out and about attending conferences, workshops, or classes should not be surprised at some point in time to look down at a program and behold the name, "Dr. Pat Smittle."
